ACTIVITIES OF THE
SOCIETY
The society has undertaken many activities
devoted to developments in Graduate and Post Graduate Mathematics during
the last ten years. A brief report is given below.
1. DEVELOPMENT OF LIBRARY:
A special library of journals, books and
reprints of research papers devoted to ` Developments in graduate level
Mathematics has been developed during the last 10 years by collecting the
relevant material from famous libraries in Bangalore , Bombay and Pune. The
15 subject wise classified files of reprints have been growing year by
year. Members can get the reprints of any papers of their choice from
this library.
2. ORGANIZATION OF MONTHLY LECTURES:
Monthly lectures by Universities and Colleges
teachers are regularly arranged at Aurangabad since 2000.Total 96 lectures
have been arranged so far at S. B. Science College Aurangabad India . These
lectures deal with the new developments in Mathematics regularly taught in
colleges. This activity became the part of the “Continuing Education
Programme” recommended by U. G. C. New Delhi .
3. ORGANIZATION OF SEMINAR COMPETITIONS:
This is an important popular activity for
college students in Marathwada, initiated by Dr. S. R. Joshi,
vicePresident MMS by donating Rs. 26,000/. Each participant has to
speak half an hour on any aspect of Mathematics not in the syllabus or
on any application of Mathematics to a subject of his choice. Preliminary
regional competitions are held at Nanded, Aurangabad and Latur, the three
districts of Maharashtra . The five cash prizes ,worth Rs.300, 200, 150,
100, 100 are distributed at each of these centres to first five
participants. These fifteen prize winners reassemble once again for a
final competition and five prizes worth Rs. 600, 500, 400, 300, 300 are
given to them . These prizes are given in memory of late Dr. K. S. Bharuka,
vice principal, J. E. S. College ,Jalna, by his intimates. A fixed deposit
worth Rs. 54,000/ is kept by them with MMS, the interest on which meets the
prize expenses. In this year 2009, these prizes have been enhanced by Mr.
Nitin Bharuka, son of late Dr. K. S. Bharuka as follows. Preliminary prizes
at these centres are : Rs. 500,/, 400,/, 300,/, 250, 250 as well as the
Final prizes are: Rs. 1,100 , 800, 600, 400, 400. For this enhancement an
additional amount worth Rs. 6,150/ has been given by him to MMS.
4. ORGANIZATION OF ANNUAL CONFERENCE:
Since 1999, the activity of organization of an
annual seminar/conference “On Developments in Graduate and Post
Graduate Mathematics” cosponsored by Marathwada Mathematical Society
at different colleges remain continued till date without fail in
Maharashtra state. On an average100 participants participated in each
conference and about 35 research papers and invited talks were presented.
Since 2008, the society has provided the T. A. facility to some embers
those who present a paper at the society's sponsored annual seminar /
conference if they have not availed T. A. facility from any other source.
Past Ph.D.students & intimates of late
Prof. N. E. Joshi, a renowned Mathematician from Nagpur University ,
instituted a special “Professor N. E. Joshi Memorial Lecture”
by contributing Rs. 32,000/ to the Marathwada Mathematical Society, the
interest on which is spent for the memorial lecture at each annual seminar
/ conference cosponsored by MMS.
.
5. PUBLICATION OF BULLETIN OF THE SOCIETY:
Bulletin of the Marathwada Mathematical
Society is published since 2000 regularly. It started with an annual
journal but soon became biannual. It is now published in June and December
every year. Selected papers from monthly lectures, conferences, and other
contributed papers, all recommended by a referee, are published in the
Bulletin. The emphasis is on Developments in Graduate & Post Graduate
Mathematics. The special issues of the Bulletin were dedicated to
three renowned Mathematicians.
i) Prof. B. G. Pachpatte : Bull.Marathwada
math.Soc. Vol 4, June 2003.
ii) Prof. S. D. Nigam : Bull.Marathwada
math.Soc. Vol 5, No.1, Dec 2005.
iii) Prof. V. Lakshmikantham : Bull.Marathwada
math.Soc. Vol 7, No.2, Dec 2006.
6. SPECIAL WORKSHOPS FOR TEACHERS:
Three special workshops on use of computers
for solving problems from the text books were arranged by MMS in November
2004, and January 2007 at S. B. Science College and University Department
of Mathematics Aurangabad respectively. They were financed by U. G. C.and
the Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University. The teachers solved some
problems on computer from each paper at the B. Sc. and M. Sc. level.
Numerical solution of differential equations using computers was emphasized
in the last third seminar at the University Department of Mathematics.
7. SPECIAL WORKSHOPS ON NET – SET:
A special workshop for the students appearing
for the NET SET examinations was conducted by MMS at S. B. Science
College Aurangabad for 38 days in Summer 2006. Two participants passed the
NET SET examinations out of the 16 participants.
8. MEMBERSHIP:
Currently MMS has 25 Patron members ( Donation
Rs 5,000/each) , 35 Patron Institutes (Donation Rs. 5,000/ each ), 201
life members (Donation Rs. 2,000/ each) They receive the free copy of
